The Light Solutions Mini Zigbee Smart Plug adds dimming to a lamp that has no dimmer of its own. It sits between the socket and the plug, and from there the lamp can be switched and dimmed from an app, from a Zigbee wall switch or by voice.
The point of a dimming smart plug is that it reaches the lights a smart bulb cannot. A floor lamp with an unusual fitting, an old table lamp, a string of decorative lights — anything with a dimmable light source can join the smart home without replacing the luminaire or the bulb.
It is Zigbee 3.0 and Hue-ready, so it pairs with a Philips Hue Bridge as well as with other Zigbee 3.0 systems, and it takes its place among the lamps already set up rather than requiring an app of its own.
The housing is deliberately compact. A round smart plug this size leaves the neighbouring socket in a double outlet free, which is the usual complaint about bulkier models, and a small status light on the side shows the state at a glance.
Fitted with an earthed Schuko plug and socket and rated IP20, for indoor use in dry locations. Note that the connected light source must itself be dimmable.
